We’re asking people what they love about the baths. One by one, Glasgow’s Victorian bathing complexes went to the wall. But after a well known Eastend members club collapsed, Alistair Macnaughton moved westward. And he’s sticking with us...
...When Dennistoun Baths shut in 1993, I and lots of other members were heartbroken. Luckily the answer to our swimming needs lay just a couple of miles away and more than a few of us signed up. It really was a lifeline to find another club where myself and my pals from just off Alexandra Parade could feel right at home. Indeed, sad though it was to see Dennistoun go, all the new members joining here were a welcome boost to the Arlington’s bank balance. It’s as invigorating today as it was when I first took a dive into our pond almost thirty years ago. And with free towels provided and swimming trunks washed, dried and hanging on my hook, I never need to remember anything except myself! A highlight of my club year is organising volunteers for Doors Open Days tours. It really is so rewarding to see visitors reactions as we show them round our grade A listed building - especially if they join up. Hopefully it won’t be too long until we are open again. I’ve already lost one club and I’ll do all I can to make sure I don’t lose another. That’s why I’m sticking with Arlington.
